SUV Central Introduces Mazda’s Most Powerful Production Vehicle Ever
The new CX-60 is causing a lot of excitement and conversation, and it is not surprising either! It is Mazda’s most powerful production vehicle to date, with 241kW/323hp. This year has also seen the release of two other significant additions to its SUV line-up with the CX-30 and the 2022 CX-5. Down at Brighton Mazda, we have noticed the excitement amongst Mazda enthusiasts, so we have decided to delve into the new models to help our readers get a better understanding on which model they should pick.
Mazda CX-30
At first glimpse, it’s easy to mistake the new Mazda CX-30's body style for the Mazda3 hatchbacks, only taller and more robust. One of the three small-end SUVs that Mazda is releasing this year, the CX-30 promises style, functionality and performance at a price that undercuts its German competitors.
Performance
Engine and handling
The Mazda CX-30 features a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 139kW.
This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that has selective options for various driving conditions. The CX-30 resemblance to the Mazda3 is becomes further obvious when you have some fun with the throttle – it surprises with speedy performance with impressive efficiency at as low as 6L/100km. You’ll enjoy crisp, stable steering that that is playful and inspires confidence.
Fuel efficiency
These days when fuel prices are skyrocketing, you’ll surely want something that doesn’t break your bank. You can’t go wrong with the Mazda CX-30 which has a inner-city fuel estimate of 7.6L/100km and 9L/100km for its non-turbo models and as low as 6L/100km if you upgrade to the hybrid system.
Exterior and interior design
The CX-30 is a sight for sore eyes to say the least with its sleek exterior and well-crafted interiors that share the same style as the Mazda3. From the dashboard, you'll see its 8.8inch display with a rotary knob on the middle console. The interior continues Mazda’s minimalistic experience, with quality materials that feel classes above. Most notable are the hugely adjustable front seats, which Mazda has designed to better support those with lower back pain.
In terms of style, the CX-30 can compete with luxury brands like the Lexus UX with its power-operated rear liftgate and plush upholstery. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the most spacious trunk among SUVs, although you can fit up to 16 suitcases if you fold the rear seats. On the upside, it keeps the vehicle compact and easy to manoeuvre through urban streets.
Infotainment and connectivity
The Mazda CX-30 is equipped with a standard 8.8-inch screen fitted with Mazda Connect that links to your MyMazda app. Here, you can do remote starting, lock and unlock your car and monitor its status through your phone.
The CX-30 also has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hotspot and USB input capabilities, and additional features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The display itself is extremely vibrant and crisp.
Safety and technology
The CX-30 is equipped with driver-assistance features, including lane-keep assist, automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. You can also add blind-spot monitoring and head-up display.
Mazda CX-60
If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale but still within your budget, the Mazda CX-60 promises to deliver in style and performance. It will be the first to be released in the new line of Mazda SUVs and has caused a lot of excitement throughout the early months of this year.
Performance
Mazda said that the CX-60 is one of its most important releases in the last decade because it will feature an all-new platform that will be the foundation for three more upcoming SUVs (TBC). The mid-sized SUV is even touted as Mazda’s most powerful production car.
The Mazda CX-60 boasts a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with a 17.8kWh battery to give you over 300hp! In fact, it produces 247kW/323hp and 500nm of torque. It also features an eight-speed transmission, which is perfect for highway driving.
Exterior and interior design
The CX-60 features a spacious cabin that brings luxe with its leather upholstery, power-adjustable steering column, heated front seats, ambient cabin lighting and a panoramic sunroof and premium trim. The interior is even comparable to its German big brothers with its features and design. The Mazda CX-60 also has a 570-litre boot space with a low load lip to allow ease of loading.
Infotainment and connectivity
The luxe Mazda SUV features the first 1.23-inch fully digital instrument cluster in the brands range. It also has an infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with Mazda Connect.
Safety and technology
Although the CX-60 hasn’t gone through a crash test yet, Mazda expects a five-star rating for its new SUV. So, you can look to get features like adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane-keep assist and safe exit warning present in other Mazda SUVs from the 2022 range.
Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 isn’t something new for Australians since it has graced the country’s roads since 2012. It’s been considered Australia’s most popular medium SUV for 7 years.
Performance
With six variants to choose from, the Mazda CX-5 has something for every need and budget. The entry point CX-5 Maxx has a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine at 115kW and 200Nm in a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The CX-5 Maxx Sport, on the other hand, has a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine at 140kW and 252Nm.
Exterior and interior design
The MY22 CX-5 doesn’t fall far from its predecessors in terms of design, but some subtle changes, the most obvious of which is the three-dimension grille design, are enough to distinguish it from the rest. You also have new colours to choose from and interior trims are sleeker than older models. Since the Mazda CX-5 has six variants, interior features will also vary, depending on what model you choose.
Infotainment and connectivity
Depending on the variant, the CX-5 can come with an 8.0-inch or 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Mazda’s signature features. You also have standard inclusions like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system for upscale variants.
Safety and technology
In 2017, The CX-5 was awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating so you can expect the same level of safety on these newer models. It has autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and night-time pedestrian detection, among its many safety features.
